Before you leave the rental lot, take five minutes.

A simple pickup routine can create a clearer record of the vehicle you received. Save this page for your next rental.

  1. Match the vehicle.Find the 17-character VIN at the lower windshield or driver-door area and confirm it matches your agreement.
  2. Walk around slowly.Check bumpers, doors, mirrors, glass, roof edges, wheels, tires, lights, and lower body panels.
  3. Photograph the whole car.Take wide views of every side, then close-ups of existing marks. Include the VIN and odometer in your own records. Keep these original files yourself; DamageLedger currently accepts text reports, not photo uploads.
  4. Check the interior.Look at seats, dashboard warnings, controls, fuel or charge level, cargo area, and any supplied equipment.
  5. Report discrepancies promptly.Follow the rental company’s process and keep its acknowledgement. DamageLedger does not replace that notification.
  6. Check the community history.Search the exact vehicle. If there is no match, you can start a basic record for yourself and the next renter.

At return

Repeat the photos, capture fuel or charge and mileage, keep the return receipt, and retain the files according to your own needs. Community history is additional context—not insurance, legal advice, or proof of responsibility.

General consumer guidance also recommends inspecting the vehicle, documenting existing damage, and retaining records. See the FTC’s rental-car guidance.
